LOCATION: Unit 022 is located just north of the city of Reno, Nevada. It is bounded on the west by the Pyramid Lake and Winnemucca Ranch Roads, on the east by the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation and on the south by Interstate 80.

ELEVATION: Elevations vary from 4,000' in the valley to 8,500' at Virginia Peak.

TERRAIN: This unit is comprised of two distinct mountain ranges, one in the northern half of the unit and one in the southern half of the unit. Both are typical of mountain ranges found in the Great Basin. They are steep, rough, and rocky single ridge ranges which run in a north-south direction, and have canyons and draws which flow off the east and west sides.

VEGETATION: Upper elevation deer habitat is characterized by mountain mahogany, big sagebrush, bitterbrush, juniper and other mountain brush species. Aspen exist primarily in the northern portion of the unit and are associated with northeastern slope pockets. When compared to areas in eastern Nevada, vegetation in this hunt area is considered to be fairly open, and lends itself well to observation of deer.

LAND STATUS: This unit encompasses approximately 450 square miles, most of which is under federal ownership. Two private ranches in the north end of the unit make access difficult, but not entirely excluded.

HUNTER ACCESS: Travel from Reno north on the Pyramid Lake Highway. Access through Big Canyon on the east side and Black Canyon on the west is blocked due to private land. Access into upper elevations above these ranches is from Cottonwood Canyon on the north end of the range near Fish Springs Ranch. It should be noted that this is an extremely rough road only passable in a four-wheel drive vehicle. Hunters are advised to carry extra gas, spare tires and tire chains when in this area.

MAP REFERENCES: U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000 scale metric topographic maps which provide a broad overview are as follows: Reno and Kumiva Peak. Several 7.5 minute topo maps which provide the best detail are as follows: Astor Pass, Spanish Flat, Pyramid SW, Dogskin Mountain, Tule Peak, Frasier Flat, Moses Rock, Pah Rah Mountain, Spanish Springs Peak, Wadsworth and Olinghouse . Topo maps are sold in Reno at the Nevada Bureau of Mines & Geology at 784-6691 and Mark, Fore & Strike at 322-9559. FACILITIES AND SERVICES: All services can be obtained in Reno, Nevada. There are no developed campsites in unit. Tent-type camps are recommended. Trailer or RV-type hunters are confined to the better road systems in the valley floors and are required to travel farther each day to reach their hunt areas. Another option would be to stay in Reno. Drinking water must be hauled to campsites.

RECOMMENDED HUNTING AREAS FOR MULE DEER: In the north, hunters should concentrate in the Vinegar Peak and Tule Ridge areas. Access into these locations is from the north up Cottonwood Creek. Access is difficult in this area, and hunters should be prepared to get off established trails in order to locate game. In the south, access is from the west side of the range through Warm Springs Valley. The eastern slopes of Virginia Peak and Pond Peak can provide good hunting, as well as the area around Spanish Springs Peak.

In Carson City, the state capital, the Kit Carson Trail historical walking tour is available, and the city is home to the Nevada State Museum, along with landmarks such as the Carson Mint at the Nevada State Museum and the silver-domed State Capitol.

In addition to Lake Tahoe, Pyramid Lake, north of Reno, is one of Nevada’s liquid gems. Completely within the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation, the lake is the largest remnant of the ancient glacial Lake Lahontan. Aside from the stunning pyramid-shaped rock formation jutting out of the lake, visitors will find some of the best fishing in Nevada with 20-pound native Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, and will be assuredly impressed with Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, home to one of the largest colonies of American White Pelicans in the nation.
